A fabulous day out at Fünfschilling

The Fünfschilling is a restaurant on a vineyard that is tucked away in Fischingen and small village near Binzen in Germany that is around 25 mins drive from Basel.  Fünfschilling is a great place to take the entire family to have an inexpensive family meal, to buy reasonably priced wine, spirits and visit their farm shop that is packed full of seasonal fruit and vegetables and other tasty treats. They also have a wonderful playground for kids and some really yummy cakes.

Enjoy a curious coffee at Basel’s old mortuary

When I entered the Zum Kuss, Cafe Kultur Bar, I was taken a back about how quirky, small and inviting the space was. There were wooden, old style, Parisian seating, a large table with candelabra on it and the most intriguing wall of spirits behind the bar, it was a bit like walking into the bar version of Diagon Alley’s wand shop.

The very beautiful Merian Gärten

What better way to spend a few hours on a Summer or Autumn day than wandering around the immaculate, beautiful and vast Merian Gärten in Basel.  Villa Merian was gifted to Christoph Merian on his wedding day in 1824 by his father.  The villa was used as Christoph and his wife Margaretha Burckhardt as a summer residence and was gifted to the Christoph Merian Stiftung in 1886.  In 1968 the Christoph Merian Stiftung gave Merian Gärten to Basel City so, we can all say we own a small piece of this amazing house and garden.

Cocktails at Hinz und Kunz

Hinz und Kunz is one of Basel’s most popular cocktail bars just a stones throw away from Basel’s main railway station (SBB) and part of the vibrant and cosmopolitan Markthalle, an old domed, stone market place.  I would describe the bar as old school cool, it has comfy leather sofas for lounging on, a grand dark wood […]

My four favourite buvettes – the best way to enjoy views of the Rhine

With only a few days of Summer left and the Autumn looming it’s time to enjoy the last few warm evenings or sunny afternoons at Basel’s numerous buvettes that are spread out along the Rhine. A buvette is a popup, seasonal bar that serves apero nibbles, sandwiches and other fast foods along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.  Perfect for lazy summer afternoons watching the world go by, watching the sunset over the Rhine, resting after a Rhine swim or just hanging out with family and friends.
