Winter is here and oh boy, the temperatures have dropped in Basel. We have seen our first snow and the town is glittering with Christmas lights! Christmas trees can be found on Munsterplatz, Marktplatz and in the Rathaus courtyard the tree is joined with a light display that is quite spectacular and little mesmerising to be honest, I was transfixed by it and have been back to the Rathaus a few times to take it in. The huge star on Barfuesserplatz shines brightly and reminds us all to stay hopeful. There’s no Christmas wish book, this year in the Rathaus, to reduce infection risk and of course, you know the Christmas market has been cancelled. So what are the things to do this weekend?
Enjoy a winters walk on the Rhine of through some of Basel’s beautiful streets and go on the hunt from some gluehwein, the typical spiced, alcoholic, ruby red drink that is enjoyed at this time of the year. So, where to find some great spiced wine?
At the Rhine – Kraft hotel
Near Spalen-Tor – Teufelhof have a Christmas market in their courtyard
Barfüsserplatz – Kohlmann’s restuarant
Claraplatz – KLARA
For a non-alcoholic version head to IKEA they have some really nice but, quite sweet ‘spiced berry drink’ on sale in their IKEA market in Pratteln. You can of course make your own and for this I send you to Jamie Oliver FOODTUBE click here

Basel has it’s very own Christmas cookie the Basel Brunsli is a chocolatey, nutty treat that is bound together with egg and traditionally has a shot of kirsch added to it. I change the traditional recipe to add orange liqueur instead of Kirsch to make my brunsli’s more chocolate orange in flavour.
I followed And Pilot’s recipe from her book Helvetic Kitchen Swiss Cooking
I am treating myself with a pre-Christmas overhaul, it’s my Christmas treat. Do I have parties to go to and places to be…no! But I am going to put myself through a pre-Christmas wellness MOT anyway. First stop an Elsen massage with Julie Morrow of Morrow Health then, a pedicure at the Schminkbar followed by a relaxing aromatherapy, vegan, facial with Jenny at Wohlfuehlen bei Jenny.
Total cost of my wellness MOT 350 CHF – the wellness benefit, priceless.
too expensive or staying at home? How about creating a spa day at home? I’m writing a blog article about a stay at home wellness that should be published very, very soon!
