A gin tasting evening at one Basel’s gin manufacturers – It’s Nginious!

I like to support my local artisans and buy local to keep the food miles low. This leads me, to investigate local food and drinks, often to the detriment of my waistline!

There has been a huge expansion in both the Gin and Tonic market over the last few years to the point that you need to know your Monkey 47 from your Sipsmith and whether you are an aficionado of Fever Tree Tonic or Fentiman’s Tonic.

I have to say I am not a ‘Gin and Tonic’ fan or as they say here in Basel ‘Gin Tonic’ there’s something bitter about the drink that is too harsh for my palate.  However, as I am on a constant quest to educate my pallet, I booked myself a Gin tasting evening at Independent Spirits, Liquid Spirit Distillery.

Independent Spirits distillery rooms are based in Klybeck in what looks like an old warehouse. The tasting evening was in their distillery room where we could smell and taste the botanicals they use, see their ‘still’ and most importantly taste their latest Nginious! creations. I was taken a back by the number gins produced by such a small distillery and that they made gins that were light and summery to really quite pungent. They also offered a Negroni cocktail and set lemon aperitif too!

The team at the distillery were very welcoming and I enjoyed the time I spent with them in their cosy office-distillery-lounge-bar.

I settled on the new Nginious summer gin that has jasmine, lime and rhubarb as tasting notes as well as juniper and blueberries that I am going to pair with Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic plus some ice. I also enjoyed their gin based Negroni that’s both sweet and sour in flavour and packs an orange flavoured punch.

The tasting evening was 25 CHF and was in English and German. Follow the link below to book onto the next gin tasting evening. Click here
