Exploring the treasure trove of pumpkins at Pumpkin Land, Liestal
The farm at Obere Wanne in Liestal has quite the offer with a self pick flower paradise, a maize maze and kürbisland or pumpkin land that opens Sept-Oct every year. Last weekend I went on a hunt for a great pumpkin for halloween, I was thinking a large, orange pumpkin would work out just fine however, I came home with 4 pumpkins, all with different aromas and recipe ideas of how to cook each one! It may seem extravagant to buy so many pumpkins at once but the ones I chose have a shelf life of 3-4 months so, can be stored in my cellar or on the balcony until needed. I particularly look forward to cooking the two ‘sweet dumpling’ pumpkins that I bought that have chestnut aromas and are good for adding to pasta or risotto.
Why do I recommend this place? The selection, the guidance given on taste, cooking ideas and storage length. The general ambience and friendliness of the family who own the farm. Also, there’a a flower field, plant nursery and maize maze at the farm too! However, due to corona the maize isn’t open this year.

What did I buy and what am I going to cook with them? I like to add pumpkin cubes to a home made chickpea or chicken curry or lace through pasta with bacon, truffle oil and maybe some parmesan.

Kürbis land is 15 mins drive from Basel’s town centre and there is loads of parking at the farm. The nearest train stop is Altmarkt which is 10 mis walk away from the farm.
They don’t allow dogs in the pumpkin tent and the ground can be a bit muddy so take wellies or old shoes.
