Well, the weather has certainly changed and the nights are getting darker earlier which makes me want to stew food and eat lots of molten cheese. What are the best things to do in Basel in October? Search for an amazing pumpkin, enjoy the parks and gardens of Basel, go to the Theatre, relax in the spa or go to one of the many Museum’s in Basel.
At the end of October we should see the return of the Herbstmesse Basel’s Autumn fair but to keep us all safe this year it is cancelled.
Pumpkins are every where in the Autumn time they can be found in the supermarket, market and in our farm shops. They are an amazing vegetable as they can be boiled, mashed and roasted, made into soups, stew and laced through spaghetti with bacon and walnuts to make an autumnal pasta dish.
For some great Autumnal recipes look no further than Andie Pilot the Swiss-Canadian author of the book ‘Helvetic Kitchen’
I bought my first Autumn pumpkin at the Fuenfschilling a restaurant, farm shop and winery on a vineyard in Fischingen near Binzen in Germany.
Here’s my recommendations for things to see at the Theatre in October.
Oh G! It’s Drag – The Roasting Edition
In honour of Odette Hella’Grand’s birthday, drag queens form across Switzerland and a few from Germany will be on stage, for an evening of politically incorrect humour. Get a roasting from the meanest queens.

I have in mind a spa day blog article where I will write about my positive experience at Sole Uno, Dampfbad and Balinea Thermen plus give you some hints to how I recreate a spa day at home. A great day spa is Bodyzone I go there for facials and waxing when I am feeling flush. My favourite masseuse is Julie Morrow, she’s just the best and can remove my back pain with her expert hands.
Evening animals at the Cartoon Museum is an exhibition by the artist Brecht Evens, who creates, vivid and energetic depictions of the life of his generation. I think the artwork is very modern, yes cartoon like but very playful, witty and fun! The exhibition is called Night animals and includes huge frescos and more traditional framed works.
The exhibition runs until the end of January 2021
The Antikenmuseum exhibits the Oriental grand tour is a collection of photographs from the Ruth and Peter Herzog collection that depicts the discovery of the East by Europeans in the 18oo-1880. The pictures describe what these adventures found, exploited and built upon.
The exhibition runs until teh 13 December.
All museums are free on the first Sunday of the month however, a museums pass will afford you access to over 300 Museums in Switzerland and some in the Alsace and Black Forest too!
Read the two blog posts written by Julie Morrow How to make great food choices and How to prioritise your own health and wellbeing.
