Matt and Elly is a micro brewery, bar and restaurant is near the Musical Theatre in Basel. It has a large terrace area outside and prides itself in offering their own craft beers and locally sourced food and plant based options for the environmentally conscious diner. The bar is very arty, cool and there is a mellow vibe to this place which is terribly inviting.
Why not start, as I did by ordering a beer tasting set that included 4×100 mL tasters. Each beer is distinctly different, I particularly like the beer that has been infused with Mango but I enjoyed tasting all of them.
The menu is separated into four main sections, amuse-bouche, vegetables, protein and dessert.
The vegetable dishes include fennel salad with redcurrants and burrata a beetroot salad with coriander, green beens and wasabi puree or greek salad. There is also a vegetable tart and moussaka. The proteins on offer all all sourced from Switzerland including their plant based chicken.
I enjoyed their summer fennel salad with red currants and burrata cheese. They offer a number side the best one is their plant based chicken, that looks and tastes like chicken but is entirely meat free. The plant based chicken was first developed at Zurich University by two PhD students, it’s terrific, packing a flavour punch that I was not expecting. It’s worth a try! Why not try a home made ice cream to finish with red berry with vanilla or chocolate. My ice cream arrived with a lovely Scottish style, shortbread biscuit.
The menu at Matt and Elly changes regularly to keep in sync with the seasonal offer in our local markets so, you may not find exactly what I had to eat in the Summer on 2020. All in all, Matt and Elly was a great experience and I would 100% return to eat here. My meal cost 65 CHF for three courses excluding the beer tasting.
Matt and Elly is located between the Badisherbahnhof and Musical Theatre on the tramline 14.
