Basel summertime bring the chance to have afterwork drinks, to enjoy the last rays of sunshine before sunset or at the weekend, spending time lounging on one of Basel’s terraces or enjoyed at one of the many pop-up buvettes.
Das Viertel has a beach bar inspired roof terrace that offers a buzzy, fun atmosphere with drinks and bar food. There is also a restaurant and night club to dance until dawn. The roof terrace is in Munchenstein, on the number 15 tram. Mid Price.
Le Rhein Bleu is a restaurant with a sun bathing bar and is an excellent spot to go Rhine swimming from. The restaurant/bar is on stilts and projects over the Rhine giving an amazing view up the river to the Basel Cathedral or Munster. I have only been there for drinks so I can’t comment on the restaurant but, the view and atmosphere make it definitely worth a visit. It’s near the Paper Mill Museum (Papiermuhle). Mid price.
Cargo Bar is a small, urban bar just under the Johanniterbrucke that has a fantastic terrace that looks over the Rhine to Kaserne and the Mittlerbrucke or the middle bridge. The bar has a wide range of live music on offer and has an active art exhibition ongoing. I took the photograph below from Johanniterbrucke looking down onto the bar.
HinzundKunz outdoor cocktail bar is a place to rest weary legs after shopping or to catch with friends afterwork. Lay back on the bars stripped deck chairs and enjoy one of the many cocktails that they have to offer. You can find this bar outside of Markthalle. Mid Price.
DECK 57 at Nordstern is a bohemian style bar, restaurant and party zone that is on the top of an old boat moored at Dreilandecke the place where France, Germany and Switzerland. This is a spot to relax, look out onto the Rhine, watch the sunset and maybe even star gaze a bit into the night sky. The restaurant serves bar food of which I can recommend their steak sandwich with a cold beer however, the mojitos are good! The dance zone had regular raves on it or if this is not your taste then, Deck 57 hosts some beautiful classical concerts too!
Les Trois Rois terrace an absolute favourite of mine, in the heart of town, right on the Rhine side. Just a beautiful, stylish location, enjoy the silver service, the extensive cocktail menu and sit and the amazing view of the middle bridge or Mittlebrucke. The bar is very well stocked to the point that they have a number of bespoke spirits made only for them for example, the three Les Trois Rois Gins from Nginious. Relax and be spoiled rotten. A little more expensive than average price but worth it as a treat!
With only a few days of summer left and the Autumn looming it’s time to enjoy the last few warm evenings or sunny afternoons at Basel’s numerous buvettes that are spread out along the Rhine. A buvette is a popup, seasonal bar that serves apero nibbles, sandwiches and other fast foods along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Perfect for lazy summer afternoons watching the world go by, watching the sunset over the Rhine, resting after a Rhine swim or just hanging out with family and friends.
Many of the buvettes open just before lunch and close between 22:00 and 23:00, expect to get a token for each class or plate that has a depot of around 2 francs on it. When you take your cup/plate back to the buvette and hand in the token you’ll get your depot back. This system keeps the buvette tables clutter and rubbish free, RESULT!
Saint Louis buvette is located in St. Johann a grey canopied, crimped metal buvette with a wealth of seating outside the buvette. They specialise in fish dishes whether that is fish and chip or fish curry wurst as well as sandwiches and apero small bites. I recommend the hummus and local bread it was super yummy and one of the buvettes weiss beers. The do have other alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks for the menu card click here.
